New Orleans Night Skyline in Black & White

I shot New Orleans Night Skyline on a clear spring evening during sunset. The golden sun reflecting off the office windows and the colorful lighting of the Superdome against a deep blue sky made for a dramatic moment. But I find the black and white conversion to be even more striking.
I’ve often noticed that even non-photographer types are immediately drawn to a strong black and white photograph. What is it about black and white photography that seems to hold so much natural appeal?
It’s been said that color photographs depict reality, while black and white ones interpret reality. Sometimes, a vibrant multicolored scene can distract the eye away from the overall composition, contrast and tonal range of a photograph.
For architectural photographs, stripping away the color helps reveal the underlying structure and form of a building or even a whole city; perhaps allowing the viewer to more easily conjure their own meaning.
For me, the black and white New Orleans Night Skyline seems to make the city more modern, cleaner and approachable. Of course, many of us who live here dream of that New Orleans every day.
