DSLR Video, HD DSLR, HDSLR: What’s In a Name?

Posted on Jun 29, 2010

I’ve been wondering for a while about what to call the new generation of HD capable still cameras like the Canon 5D Mark ll, Nikon D9o, Panasonic GH1, etc. Are they HD DSLRs, DSLR Video cameras, HD SLR cameras, etc? Turns out I’m not the only one.

Jared Abrams over at Cinema5D has settled on HDSLR, which is also my personal favorite. Other naming variations include the word hybrid, such as Redrock Micro’s DSLR Hybrid Cinema Rigs. Out of curiosity, I ran some relevant terms through Google’s keyword tool to see exactly what words people are actually using when they search for … uh, you know … those new cameras. You can see the results after the break …

My (non-scientific) research shows that the search terms dslr video and hd slr are by far currently the most popular. In the chart, I’ve excluded any brand names in order to stay focused on the generic camera terms. The contending pro favorite, hdslr, is way down the list so apparently it hasn’t caught on yet.

What’s your take on the perfect name for these cameras? Or are you waiting for the next generation of hybrid-full-hd-dslr-video-camera-machines?
