Building USS New York (LPD 21): Through the Eyes of the Shipbuilders

Posted on Nov 15, 2009

Last Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, the USS New York (LPD 21) was commissioned in New York harbor and officially came to life as the Navy’s newest warship.

This was a special moment for me, as I had the opportunity to document the construction of the ship and produce a short documentary on four shipbuilders who visited New York City to meet with survivors and family members of victims of 9/11. Built by Northrop Grumman, the new amphibious transport ship contains 7.5 tons of steel from the World Trade Center molded into her bow stem.

The film has no narration, but uses personal storytelling to reveal the connection between the shipyard workers and members of the September 11th Families’ Association. Click the image or link below to view the video.

Client: Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding; Produced by Robert Berning Productions; Director/Cameraman: Ed Metz; Producer: Alexis Vicknair; Editor: Mark Glaviano. The film has received a Silver Telly award, a Gold Davey award and a Silver Addy from the Advertising Club of New Orleans.
